Positions Available

When you become a member of the NSW Rural Fire Service, you'll be joining more than 70,000 hard working, dedicated and professional men and women, helping their community in many different areas of work.

Fighting fires on the front line simply wouldn't be possible without the support of those working across a variety of specialist positions 'behind the scenes'. With a variety of important roles to choose from, there's sure to be one that's right for you.

Firefighter

While best known for fighting bush fires, RFS firefighters attend many different types of incidents including structure fires, motor vehicle accidents, storm damage and searches. Firefighters also play an important role in hazard reduction, preparing areas for controlled burning.

RFS firefighters come from all walks of life and from communities all over NSW. Fire fighting is challenging but it's also rewarding. It's also a great way to learn new skills.

Leadership

In each of our 2200 brigades across NSW, you'll find people helping, teaching and leading others. Officer roles include captains, deputy captains and crew leaders. These members are responsible for coordinating members and brigade activities. You'll also find people in roles such as President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary, ensuring the smooth running of each brigade.

Some of our most experienced members go on to roles such as group captains and deputy group captains.

Brigade Support

Every brigade needs a team of members working behind the scenes in support roles. This can include equipment maintenance and readiness. It's an important role which helps ensure we provide the best possible service.

Training

Consistent training helps to ensure the community receives the best possible level of fire protection. Training is coordinated at the brigade level by Training Officers. These members help volunteers to further develop their skills, whether it be fire fighting, leadership, operating equipment or learning more about fire and fire protection.

Safety and Welfare

Safety is always top priority. Safety officers ensure volunteers use best possible practices for the protection of themselves, their fellow members and the public.

Community Education

Every day, you'll find our members involved in their communities, helping residents with fire safety and prevention. Community education helps people understand the risks of fire and how to protect themselves and their property.

Aviation

The Rural Fire Service has access to more than 100 aircraft for use across the State. There's a team of dedicated members such as Air Base Operators, Aviation Radio Operators, Air Attack Supervisors and Air Observers.It's a fast paced, exciting and rewarding area of work.

Communications

Our radio network is backed up by a hard working team of men and women with an interest in communications. They assist in deploying crews and resources, providing information and recording details about incidents.

Catering

Firefighting is tough work and our crews can't do it without the support of our catering units. Catering units are made up of men and women, young and old. It's rewarding and a fantastic way to meet new people.

Fire Investigation

Senior members can further their skills by becoming fire investigators. These members go into a fire scene and assist in determining the cause of the fire. Fire investigators play a vital role in helping us to better understand fire, its causes and ways to prevent it.

Cadets

If you're between the ages of 12 and 16, you can join the Rural Fire Service as a cadet. It's a fun and safe way of learning more about fire fighting techniques, communications and equipment. Chances are you'll make friends for the rest of your life.
